Working dogs have a new place to shop - and sniff - in Echo Park

Blue Collar, a pet supply store primarily for dogs and the occasional cat, quietly opened its doors for business this week on Echo Park Avenue. The store, located in a renovated 2,600-square-foot warehouse space, is serious about promoting itself as selling "supplies for the working dog." Not only does the store sell pet food and toys but training collars, bite-sleeves, and other equipment for police, rescue, hunting and service dogs used by the blind.

The owners, former music industry workers Michelle van Arendonk and Barry Hewitt (pictured above with their dog, Grimm, recovering from recent surgery), also said they will stock bigger harnesses and and supplies for bully breeds and pit bull mixes popular in the neighborhood. It will be several weeks before all the merchandise arrives and a grooming station and training classes will be available, van Arendonk said. The store, which is making available samples of grain-free and holistic pet food, is currently open seven days a week from 10 am to 7 pm.

  1. Yes! Have been waiting for a local pet store to open in the neighborhood-trek to Collar and Leash in SL is always a hassle! Now...I hope they carry Wellness....

  2. What a misnomer! No working dog or working person can afford their prices!
    It's false advertising.

  3. I can vote for the owners. I know them well. With them you and your dogs are in good and animal-loving hands.

  4. Maybe small animal supplies too? That would be nice. Tired of going to Sunset Fish and Tropical.

  5. if you're local and you havent been to this place, GO! Its a total destination on your aimless dogwalks. They have agility equipment anyone can use. Also, they loaded me up with so many free samples I wont need to buy food for a week. Even though i told them I didnt bring my wallet, they treated me and my dogs like we bought the entire toy section (very awesome selctons, btw)so i had to comment as soon as i got home.

  7. The owners are very nice and will carry whatever brand you ask them to order for you. Their prices are competitive, remember it is very high quality food. Also because it is such a wonderful store and I like to encourage this type of business in the neighborhood I am even willing to pay a bit more. Their toy selection is very awesome as another local mentioned above. I hope they do very well in that location!!!

  8. Great people with a great store. They care about dogs and are very helpful. They know about pet health and training. Their products are high quality !...from food, toys, training stuff, leashes, collars. You get what you pay for;I rather get something good for my dog and that will last.

I am sick of going to these pet stores that were full of crap... so happy to have a store in the neighborhood with high quality products and cool/nice people that own it!

  9. Us and our pit love this place. The prices beat all the other pet stores we were going to in Silver Lake. Their bullysticks are only about $2 as opposed to $6 you see elsewhere. And they help you find what is best for your dog including samples of really great, high quality food. We love it here!

  10. im still reeling from my visit to bluecollar! the owner must have spent 30 mins with me explaining all the foods in detail. without looking at the package, he knew the exact protein levels and ingredients for each food! he helped me find the best food for my highly allergenic german shepherd rescue. he took the time to personally fit my (very sketchy, easily spooked)dog with a harness. and the harness was only $8! for those who think this place is expensive, you need to actually look at the prices, and then go elsewhere and compare. the food is cheaper than most places in the area. i cant compare it to PetCo because apparantly, they dont sell food carried by major chains.

  11. we absolutely love this place and we includes my partner, our terrier, our sharpei/pit, and myself. not only are the owners uber helpful, but sincere. they also took the time to help us find the right harness for our bigger dog AND let us exchange it without any hassle when we decided it was too small. they even let us do a trail test around the block. they carry great food at significantly lower prices than i've seen elsewhere AND have training classes which i'm going to look into right now...
